My father just picked up one of these for (what seemed like) a pretty good deal. The thing is super clean on the outside (not showroom, but considering it's 20 yrs old, I'll throw around the term "perfect").
Pix to come later.
As far as the "what seemed like" bit goes - mechanically, it's great too - even at 220k miles. HOWEVER - there are a number of electrical oddities that keep it from being awesome. Currently going through wires, and diagrams and such, so I'm sure I'll be posting questions in here, as well as -USING THE SEARCH FUNCTION- (a rarity, I'm aware).
If anyone would like to help with this - that'd be fantastic. If not, that's good too - I'll post my findings of issues, and their answers, in threads if no answer has come up already.
The issues are as follows:
Headlights and tail-lights do not work. High-beam, low-beam, DRL, turn signals, etc.... Haven't a clue. Fuses are good - haven't checked relays yet. What makes it interesting is that where the bulb plugs in (on the low-beams) is burned / melted / singed... on both sides. The rest are cleam.
Radio appears to be dead - not sure if it's getting power - just doesn't turn on at all.
The climate control system has been modified - and now the fan has a single on/off switch (P/O wired it in with a cheap toggle switch from Autozone (or similar).
Mirror toggle switch / stick appears to be busted... Only has three positions it really sticks in - "rear view mirror", and both of the mirror folding areas... Pretty sure I'll need a new switch for that.
Rear driver's side door does not open. It's unlocked, but perhaps the handle just came off of the cable inside the door? (latch issue).
Few extra wires here and there, which'll take some time to figure out where they all go - P/O had some sort of radar detector installed, and ripped it out before he sold it - but left all the wires. *grr*.
Speedometer and fuel-consumption gauges are dead, but still light up. Temperature, and mileage readouts are still good, but the backlight is dead on them... Not sure if that's all related.
Finally, there's something that's chewing through power even when it's turned off. Battery dies overnight. P/O put in a massive switch at the battery for connecting / disconnecting power to the car. Assume he couldn't figure it out either.
Vaccuum leaks everywhere.
Anywho, if anyone knows anything, or would to just say hello - gimme a shout! Would love to hear from ya, and am looking forward to working through all these issues.
With that being said, I love the car already. My brother says driving it is like driving a small planet (due to it's size). It feels like a tank, and a "grown up" version of my sister's '96 C280 - it fits me really well, being 6'4" and all.
Again, pix to come soon,
Here's a video of my light problem. If you're unable to view the video - here's a rundown of the current lighting problem.
Headlights (hi/lo-beam) do not work. Bulbs / fuses are fine. Turn signals work. Hazard flasher does not - it will not stay on, on the center console - and even if I hold it on, the bulbs do not flash.
In "parking light mode", if I pull the hi-beam toggle switch back (windshield wiper level), the light comes on on the instrument cluster, indicating hi-beam, yet lights do not come on. If I push it back (i.e. - to keep it on), the indicator light does not come on (nor do the lights themselves).
In "headlight mode" everything works the same as above, excepting that if the hi-beam toggle gets pushed back, the hi-beam indicator on the gauge cluster stays on (as it should), yet still no hi-beams.
