Merc V8 3.8 or 4.5 Which Engine??

Hi everyone, Can anyone tell me a bit about these two V8s. If one is better than the other or if there are any inherant problems.

The reason i ask is because i have a Triumph stag i'm restoring and need to replace the engine which is currantly a Rover 3.5 V8. I refuse to use the original Triumph V8 as i believe it's the worst V8 engine ever produced in automotive history! and they cost squillians to build and maintain.
The Rover 3.9 seems the obvious choice (as Triumph & Rover were part of the same company)but the Merc V8's have caught my attention. Which brings me here to this forum. As The Triumph Stag was pitched against the Mercedes Benz SL classes and the Stag failed misserabley in that contest there's a wiff of irony or "connection" for want of a better word, putting a Merc V8 in my Triumph.
The reason i'm looking at the Merc 3.8 and the 4.5 is because it's from the same era as my Triumph, 1977.
All the info about these two engine is much appreated. Hight, weight, dimentions, alloy, perfomance, Etc...............

Might be easier (and cheaper) to drop in a Chevy 350, what with the original 3.5 V8 being a Buick derivative.
