My name is Emily, and I'm an ignorant but enthusiastic new (old) Mercedes owner! I fancy myself quite the mechanic in the future, but it's going to be a long road. :)
I've never thought much about Mercedes - just that it was a type of car WAY out of my lower-middle-class league. It was probably a dumb thing to do, but when my SO and I saw Otto for the first time, we fell in love.
Otto is a 1991 300sel with 187k miles. Body and trim have plenty of cosmetic issues with significant rust on numerous panels and missing chrome here and there. The interior is in very good condition with only minor flaws. All electric seems to be in working condition with a couple of exceptions (headlight wipers, bad wiring job on a crappy aftermarket stereo).
We are having starting issues with the car, including a long crank time, stalling once or twice after starting, and a bit of a rough idle. After driving about 10 miles, the car is PURE bliss! It drove very well despite having an absolutely putrid air filter, old spark plug wires, and mismatched plugs, all gapped at 150%+ of where they should have been. Now that it's received even the most modest of tune-ups, it's running great with the exception of the rough starting idle.
This car just oozes quality and dignity, even through a thick film of neglect. It's definitely sparked a passion for the gorgeous w126 that will probably stay with me for a lifetime. I hope to keep Otto patched together and running as best we can through the next couple of years. Maybe we'll have a garage to tuck him in someday for me to tinker and learn.
Regardless of how this journey? debacle? turns out, I'd like to thank everyone (particularly the w126 forum) for all the information they post and the questions they've asked and answered that have helped me learn so much about the inner and outer workings of this awesome car!
PS - pics are a before and after a (multiple) wash and (multiple) wax! What a filthy car!
