E320 1997 Gear Stalls: I'm a new owner & new member
I have a problem with my E320 1997. I am an expat living in Saudi Arabia and I bought this car last week. After a couple of days of driving while coming to a stop at a traffic signal I felt some jerks (in machinery, not bodily jerks) and the car refused to move though it was still in D. The engine was running fine and I restarted the car several times but the gears just wouldn't engage. I had it towed to a mechanic (didn't know where the MB service station was, still don't). He said the entire gear box/transmission needs replacement. I agreed and it was done (not new). Problem is, the replaced one is doing the same, although it does engage the lower gears, if not 3-4-5.
This is my first Mercedes and I am inexperienced at all this and would really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction.
The temperature stays around 95-100 (marker between 80 and 120) and at night stays even lower, around 85-90. Also, when I turn the car on, the 'display defective' with a radiator sign is shown. I don't drive more than 110 kmph, rarely 120 kmph. There's a dip-stick in the gear box.
Thanks to all.

Reason: Forgot to mention about the gear box dip-stick.
