Grey Market W123 Limo from Florida to California

Hi everybody,

Although being very rare, I was able a few weeks ago, to purchase my second w123 long wheel base (so called limo..).
1982 300D Turbo
1984 300D

With the first one the registration hasn't been an issue, because the car was already a California title.
The second one instead, arrived from Florida with no plates, but a valid Florida registration and clean title.
The car was obviously imported from Europe about 25 years ago, it still has the european bumpers and headlights
I've pointlessly been to the DMV 2 times before contacting a private agency that would charge me only $25 to take care of the registration and straighten things out.
I was 100% sure these guys would have done their job fast and properly.
Instead today I receive a call from one of them saying that to be able to register the car I have to bring it to American standard, and that the whole procedure would cost me $4.500.
I was amazed and basically just hang on them as I was driving, and I've spent the last 2 hours trying to find some useful informations here and elsewhere with no great results.

Between the posts though, I understood, the if the car is 25 year old or more, it doesn't have to be standardized.
Is it true?
Did any of you guys know anything about this matter, or has gone through this before and is able to help my out with some useful hints?
I would really appreciate your help.
Ah..yeah, this is my first post ever, definitely not the last.

I attach a few picture of the 1982, that I'm actually restoring and that will be for sale very soon.
