Soon to be Merc owner, with an already strange situation

Hey guys. I just got home from looking at a Merc a friend I made is sick of looking at in his garage and wants to give it to someone who's actually gonna do something with. Amazing situation, and given some time (and once I have the title in my grubby little hands and it's all legit, i'll divulge the details). Anyways, here's where things get strange.

He says it's a 1979. Fair enough, it has 4 headlights horizontally laid out, the large grill mounted symbol (star? i'm new to mercs, I think that's what it's called though right) and has the slc type style (hard top, 2 door, 280 badging, etc). Here's where things go weird. It's badged as a 280cl. The guy who has it, knows a lot about the history. He's owned it for several years now but has never really driven it, it was a project for his son who has no interest in it. He's restored mercs, jags, etc previously and claims it was a German sold car, brought over to texas by someone in the service. He also claims it was a test mule for either MB, or an MB dealership there in Germany. I can't find hide nor hair of CL classes sold in the US. Some scarce info from some aussie car ratings sites but that's about it. It has additional bodywork attached (looks aftermarket, but late 70's/early 80's vintage), 2 3into1 headers, and DOHC I6 (figuring it's the 2.74), it appears to be lowered, but i haven't had it up on a lift so it's just speculation. It has every single piece I can think of. Even down to the sunroof lip, mechanical FI, etc and it even has manual windows/sunroof/climate control knobs and the big triangle hazards button on the center console. It has a rubber rear spoiler and rear window lip on the upper edge of the rear window. He claims both are OEM.

Now that's all the info I gleaned from the guy. I'm picking up this thing tomorrow or thursday, it's just a matter now of figuring what exactly I'm dealing with so I know 1) how much work I'll put into this, 2) what model(s) I can use to get parts for this thing. And what I should take off (body kit isn't in the best of shape, his driveway has a rather steep transition so it might be coming off unless it's actually worth repairing), and what I should keep (the rear spoiler needs some love and paint before i'd even consider leaving it on).

Anyways, really excited to get into this thing. Learning a lot about this vintage merc and documenting the build as I go. I'll be the first to admit I have put maybe 2 hours of research time into the car, as I just found it. But any help on history, suggestions, parts sources and just plain old discussion would be very much appreciated!

Robin

Here's a picture I took today while trying to get it started... The rubber hose running from the tank to the filter/pump assembly rotted (Sign of things to come sadly, sitting for so long, it's doubtful any rubber is going to stay on the car), so it didn't start, only leak fuel onto his garage floor. I wish I'd have taken a picture of the badge, or the VIN while I was there, now that i've been home and have been running into dead ends finding out about the car.

Anyways, off to bed with me. All this research is gonna keep me busy at work

Looks like a regular old 280ce coupe (based off the w123 model mercs of the day) the guy probably just got mixed up on the naming when he was explaining it to you, or does it actually say CL on it?

Either way, they're nice cars when they're fixed up, i have an '85 300D sitting in my driveway and despite the rust it still runs like a champion

Edit: just re-read, it does say cl? ... Wierd.. Are you sure the top two prongs of the E haven't simply fallen off?

thats a good possibility, I saw the ce pictures when I was doing research last night, there are differences though, this one has the large emblem in the center of the grill (slc style). Maybe it was a conversion? Also the dash is the same as the slc, I think the se had a different dash. This could also just be the difference between a euro and a US Spec car maybe?

I honestly don't know enough about these cars and this vintage of MB's to say anything definitively, hence the thread haha.
