I'm Dave, 44, from Sarasota, FL - a great part of the U.S. to live in where it's not unusual to say my current daily driver is a 1979 Cadillac Sedan deVille d'Elegance. I'm serious! It's yellow and fits this fabulous tropical area.
I've owned 51 cars in my driving life of car disease, mostly luxury cars including 16 Mercedes, 1 BMW, 1 Jag, 5 Rolls-Royce, 1 Bentley, 1 Audi, 7 Cadillac, the rest are Honda, Acura, Saab, Buick, Ford, Jeep, a Mercury Marquis Grande', etc.
I joined this forum because in the near future my car addiction is speaking to me that I need a 81-85 300SD or a 92-95 300SD/S350, and I intend to learn if I'm crazy to pursue a 140 3.5 diesel or go with the proven old school 5 cylinder diesel. I had a 91 350SDL briefly back in 1996 before I traded on a brand new E300 Diesel - didn't have the 350 long enough to know if the engine was cursed. I had a 3.0 diesel in a 87 300D and liked it but didn't love it.
Here is my list of MB cars I've owned, all of them were super nice stock examples:
[owned 1993-1994, from 119 to 154k] - champagne/palomino, a dear friend turned me on to MB diesels and got me hooked, met one of my best friends through this car deal, a true professional Mercedes-Benz dealer, now retired!
[1994, 156k-157k] - manganese brown/beige leather, original owner was a friend, I admired this car for years until I owned it!
[1994-1995, 47k-90k] - silver/navy, trap oxidizer, great driver when it worked, I'm not a believer.
[1994-1995, 159k-171k] - sexy, Lapis Blue/black leather, as the brochure stated: exotic!
[1995,52k-63k] - black pearl with gray leather - wow, what a car!!
[1995, 89k-91k] - silver with black leather, beautiful original, smelled great inside and outside!
[1995-1996, 46k-54k] - white/gray, to this day the highest price I've paid for a car - $48k! Totaled out in a spectacular accident - this car saved my life!
[1996, 18k-25k] - desert taupe/brown, only 18k miles!
[1996, 125k-142k] - smoke silver/palomino, nice car!
[1996, 77k-81k] - black/black - Darth Vader would have driven this tough car!
[1996-1997, 0k-29k] - silver/gray, only Mercedes-Benz I bought brand new, nice smooth modern diesel!
[1997-1998, 153k-162k] - silver blue/navy, a total driver, sold it to a German guy who became my best friend!
[1999-2000, 126k-134k] - smoke silver/palomino, a really nice California spec car with the first of the trap oxidizers! Of course it failed!
[2000-2001, 69k-87k] - originally custom ordered in teal/parchment, lower cladding was also teal, very cool!
[2000-2001, 185k-196k] - orient red/palomino, my Dad's car that I grew up with this beauty, wish I had it now!
[2003, 83k-85k] - black/gray. Sold it to a friend who is Serbian who I swear worships at the three pointed star on this car in his garage every night!
So, I haven't owned a Mercedes-Benz since 2003, I love the 123 and 126 5-cylinder diesels and I always loved the mammoth 140 cars, especially the 500. I had some expensive follies with all of the 140's I owned but overall loved them.
When I got accustomed to spending big money on fixing MB cars that's when I decided I may as well spend it on Rolls-Royce, and once I figured out the reliable vintages of those they proved to be cheaper to drive than most of my 140's. I don't mean to make anyone on this forum feel bad, some of my non-desirable model year RR's broke the record for repairs and made up for every cent I invested in every other car I've ever owned!
I say I look forward to meeting all of you and let's talk some cars!
