Mother's Day Gift
For Mother's Day I've decided to fix up mom's baby -- a midnight blue 1989 190E 2.6 W201. This was her 3rd Benz, after a 300D in the 70s, then a 380SL in the early 80s. She was the original owner of all 3, and loved each one of them as any mom loves her baby(s).
I pass by the Mercedes Benz showroom where she bought them, on West Broadway, in Vancouver, BC Canada, and I can only imagine how happy she must have felt driving her new baby off the lot.
The 190E runs fine, it has just failed BC "Aircare" which I suppose is similar to US SMOG emissions testing. It also seems a bit harder to turn than should be, and the passenger front end seems to sit a bit lower than the driver side. Cosmetically, the driver interior wall-panel is peeling away from the window.
When running, the engine sounds really nice, even with a bit of rust through the rear muffler. Driving to Horseshoe Bay along Marine Drive is just awesome -- It doesn't jump off the line, instead smoothly transferring plenty of deep-seeded power. I pretty sure I drive it harder than mom ever did.
Mom got 199,533 kilometres (~120k miles) of joy out of it before she passed away of cancer in early 2010.
She sure loved that car, and the more I drive it, the more I love it too.
