DIY Vent Grilles for 07 GL450?

MB Authorized shop wants to charge $425 for replacement for two vent grilles (left driver and right driver) that have broken. Dealership wants even more to replace. Anyone done or know if this is a DIY project as total parts come to $186?

When you speak of the vent grills I am assuming you are refering to the ones on the hood correct? Not too many GL's come in my indi shop so hard for me know exaclty. However, I will be honest $425 is nuts! Not sure if there are DIY links but I am sure it can be figured out with a little time. The price of $186 for parts is not too bad. If not DIY maybe try and find a speed shop/modification shop or body shop to have them installed. They may not know the GL but they might have done something similar before.

Clarification

No, sorry (I think the name vent grilles is definitely misleading). I am referring to the moveable louvered vents on the dash where the a/c comes out of.

That very well may be a DIY job. Not exactly sure still but do you mean the vents will not open and close as well? Does air come out? The GL's vents have a crome looking ring around it and if there is a way to take that off and then take out all the vent grills.

If you look inside the vent you will see two clips at 3 and 9 o clock. just use tiny screwdriver to loosen those clips, pull the entire unit out (resembles a shorter version of tennis ball can. the brushed silver color ring pops off and you have access to all of the little louvers, etc. (I would do this on a workbench or table cause there are tiny llittle parts.) I then super glued the two flaps where you physically touch to move the airflow together, reassembled, and popped the entire unit back in. Worked like a charm! $179 for super glue and fixed both in 45 min.

I remember hearing about a story about a guy who took in his Toyota in for service and the dealer said he needed 4 new pads and rotors. Toyota wanted $2,000 to replace 4 rotors and pads. These dealers are heartless!
