1983 380SL

A very very newbie here. Couple of questions

I came across something today quite by accident that peaked my interest.

Was looking at a house with a real estate agent that I had asked to look at with the possibility of buying it. The lady that lived there was elderly and had passed away. The children don't live in the area and are getting rid of stuff long distance.

When I looked at the garage, there sat a 1983 380SL which the agent said "By the way, the car is for sale for $5000. I began to ask questions. The car has been garaged for years. The last year it had license plates renewed was 2003. It has 86K miles on it and is in great shape visually.

I have no idea when the last time it was driven, but based on registration, years.

So my questions are as follows;

1) What would be the dangers or precautions to consider for a car like this that has not been driven in years?

2) It has a hard top. Didn't think to look to see if I could remove the top, but as I looked on the web at other 83 model 380SL's, i noticed that the majority of them said convertible even showing the had top. So the question is, are all the 380SL's convertibles? If that is the case, and they don't have the ragtop, where could I price a ragtop for it at?

3) If it runs and does not need any major attention other than tuning up a engine that has set idle for years, I would imagine that $5000 is a steal for this car. Would that be a safe assumption?

Like I said, visually this car is in great shape. No body damage, rust or anything.

Thanks for helping out a total newbie and novice on this.

Depends on how motivated you and the seller are.
if you really have to have it, ( which sounds cool to me )
offer 1,500..
then you will know exactly how low they are willing to let it go.
and from there figure in about any priceless dollar amount to restore.
depending on your wish's.

Buy the house, the car will come with it.
