Front Ball Joints

Took my 1985 300SD to a mercedes mechanic today to have some regular maintenance done, and they told me that the right front ball joint was very rusted and needed to be replaced immediately, as well as the tire rod. My car has been into another shop several times over the past few months and they didn't list anything about this... but they were pretty lazy which is why I changed shops in the first place.

The mechanic quoted me 600-700 on the job which seems a bit high, but more importantly is completely out of my price range at the moment. This car used to belong to my father who does his own mechanical work. I would like to replace the ball joints and tire rods while I am visiting him in 2 weeks but first have to drive about 700km's to get there. A) Does this shop's price seem high and B) if I choose to make the drive will we all perish in fiery flames?

That price is dependent on the parts used and may include an alignment which will be
needed if the tie rod is done.
If he using OEM MB parts and the alignment is included then the price is not far off.

If you father does the work you will have to get it aligned before the drive back.

For more accurate info on your car you would want to post in the
W126 S,SE,SEC,SEL,SD,SDL Class - - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum area.

Where did you get your quote? Did you try the dealer (Three Point Motors)? They did ball joints on a 1999 E430 for less than an indy due to Three Point having a special program for cars older than 6 yrs. where you get a discount on parts and labour. The call it their 6Plus Service Program. 6 Plus Service Program | Three Point Motors | Mercedes-Benz, Sprinter and Smart Dealer in Victoria, British Columbia
