trans problems not sure where to post

2002 clk55 amg. Had a broken shifter shaft. Pulled it off re-welded it and re-installed. Now when I try to drive it won't come out of first gear. The display on the dashboard doesn't work either. Used to say p,r,n,d....now just and empty digital box. Have taken everything apart cleaned connections and re-installed. Please help.

Your shifter goes into an encased housing, which also houses the shifter control unit - the Electronic Selector Module - as one integrated unit. If you welded it, chances are, debris found its way through the slot in the case, onto the circuit board, causing irreparable damage. It sounds like you need a new shifter.

You may have fault codes stored on the EGS, certainly if you opened the ignition whilst the shifter was disconnected, these codes will need to be cleared.

Clearing faults in the Trans Control Unit will not resolve shift issues....

Excuse me as I am a mere novice at this. Probably why I have 33k posts, I am still trying to get it right, oh and being a Benz Tech with 30 odd years experience does not help either, maybe I should work on nissan?

We have a guy at our shop who's been working on MB for 34 years. He can't fix a sandwich...

I am that guy in your mind, you are an apprentice in mine. What you posted about the shifter is correct but you do not wish to view any other opinion and replies to threads work best with many opinions. OK

Ty for your help. When I welded the shifter I removed it from the housing. I didn't weld it while it was in the car. How would I go about clearing fault codes? And could that be what is keeping the display on the dashboard from showing what gear it is in?

Did you ever disconnect the shifter from the linkage rod (underneath the car, connects the shifter to the transmission) at any time during your repair? If so, it may need to be adjusted, to allow for proper centering of the PRND positions in correspondence to the positions at the transmission. Otherwise, implausible communication between your shifter & transmission can result. Another question: how did the shifter rod break in the first place?
