Price transparency - spare parts

Well, looks like I have an issue with infrared remote. I've recently bought the car (W124, year 1994) and it only came with 1 (broken) remote. Tried to get existing remote unsuccessfully back to life. Asked local dealer to get a replacement and been quoted NZ$ 613.00 (US$ 510) , well I might drive a MB but I am not stupid. I've been quoted for the same remote in Europe EUR 208 (US$ 270). Both MB dealers. Am I missing something or somebody is trying to shave some sheep down here?

I was under impression same spare part would have roughly the same price (ok I could live with +/- 20%) but 100%???

Now the problem is, to get a replacement key, you have to go personally to the dealer and prove ownership. As this data can be easily verified online in New Zealand (providing drivers licence number) it should not be much of an issue to order the key from elsewhere? But wherever I ask they return me to local (New Zealand) dealer. And when asked to reason such a price difference, I haven't even got an answer (obviously ignorance is the best bet or might be heretic to question their honesty ).

Any hints?

Yes, markups of up to 100% are common, though not typical. A markup of less than 20% is a favor and deserves a thank you.

When I need to use a mechanic, I work with one who lets me source my own parts. I tip him 25% of my purchase price of the part. Even with the tip, I come out way ahead. I have a much greater incentive to find the lowest price than any mechanic or dealer.

BTW: A remote on a 1994 W124? I thought those were all third-party aftermarket items, but I could be mistaken.

I can't believe that, so every dealer can charge at their will whatever they like. I was asking authorized MB dealers. I thought this might be more organised. MB headquaters give those stealerships a decent margin anyway and I've got the lower quote through a dealer as well (so they are earning something within EUR 200 as well). I reckon margin of those might be up 200%. That's ridiculous.

It definitely is a genuine remote, annoying actually as drivers door doesn't have a door lock (just the lights) so I have to lock/unclock from the pasenger door or trunk. Will see if they are the same ripoffs in Australia.
