new member with S430 problem

Hi I am new here. I have an 03 S430 4matic. I have been told I need new front lower control arms. Apparently they come with a built in ball joint in the middle of the arm that can not be replaced .Has anyone had this issue and is there a kit or anyway one can be pressed in? If not I am looking at $700 a side plus labour. Thanks

Welcome to the "S" class an everyday occurance in shops all around the country, the front lateral links will be next if not already in need of replacement. As far as I know, there is not a servicable part on the control arm or the links. Then there's the airbag suspension, cat convertors, your list goes on & on and requires deep pockets if you're having to pay to play.

I've never worked on an MB, but recently I changed a front control arm on an Accord, with no special tools (other than a nice mallet). How hard is it on an MB?

Common problem, the joint connects to the strut, you have to change the entire lower control arm sorry to say.

ERIC.

That likely depends on your tool load and experience. I have owned several shops so I have tools. The job is not that challenging as I recall it's eay with some basic stuff like extra long offset box end metric wrenches, ratcheting wrenches, "s" wrenches and a basic load of sockets & ratchets of various lenghts. Floor jack & jack stands if you have no lift or access to a lift, torque wrench and a manual. Might not be the product to learn on without confidence, but easy enough to accomplish.
