Unhappy B200 starter

Have a 2007 B200 with 70,000 km and need to replace the starter
After reading the posts I realized that it was not something to attempt at home and did not want just any mechanic so I opted to go to the Mercedes Dealer
It took them most of the day to confirm it was the starter, they called me today to inform me that when they lowered the steering column it seized and I need to pay for a new one. I was told it had to do with the fact that my model had one made out of aluminum vs steel and that lead to the problem.

Is this a crock of **** and should I have to pay for anything?

To do the starter in the b class the whole subframe is dropped a couple of inches to gain clearance. To do this the steering column must be disconnected at the rack in order to gain clearance. The column can become seized to the rack and become a major pain to disconnect. Wis tells you to cut the steering gear off if it is seized. Being a 2007 vehicle you must be just outside the warranty. Any chance your dealer will goodwill the steering gear? If not there isn't mush you can do other than bite the bullet and pay for a new steering gear.
