Hello everyone, new to the board and I thought that I better register after years of reading Benzworld.org it has been extremely helpful and interesting. I have been interested in automobiles for over 40 years mainly Mercedes and Porsche, There is so much satisfaction out of sorting out a car that some hacker has tried to incorrectly repair, or is suffering from lack of maintenance and care.
I perpetually have what I call a “Therapy/Project” car. This past year I found the cream of the crop of Therapy/project cars, a 1991 300SL which I paid $2,000.00 for... at that point I think $1,000.00 to $1,500.00 would have been more like it. But I didn’t buy the car for a “DEAL” I needed more therapy! And I got a huge dose, This car was so beat up and not maintained and would barely run and nothing else... It came with receipts totaling $$$Thousands in Hack repairs including over $8,000.00 for a valve job and blown head gasket repair... that doesn’t make much sense for a 6 cyl Mercedes with only a 100K on the clock, this car had another leaking Head Gasket with less than 1,000 miles since the previous head rebuild!! Every Place that you can put fluid was the wrong type, to much or to little I could only drain out 8 ounces of tar like goo out of the differential...After the engine was put back together correctly and fuel injection cleaned up, I Replaced the Transmission fluid with MB recommended Type, what a dramatic improvement, I had thought the trans was Bad , To sum it up it has been a Joy to fix this car up! I still have the Conv Top Hydraulics to replace. I really like this car and now feel like it was a bargain. I am so impressed with the information on this board ….I was able to do the head gasket correctly Plus straighten out the Power steering and all of the other accessories attached to the engine, A New radiator.. fix the flashy Instrument cluster syndrome.. all effortlessly and correctly. I hope to contribute what I can in the future, If I can make just one contribution to this forum, it would be, don't be a hacker take your time and learn how the Mercedes Gods wanted it to be done, If you have a warning buzzer blaring, don't figure out how to circumvent it, take your time and fix it right, never take short cuts or use cheaper incorrect fluids, Thank you for all for your contributions.
