I just bought a 97 E300 diesel that has 197,000 on it and has ben run on bio diesel for the last 100K or so. I plan on running it on bio also. It is a non-turbo and had a slight knock in the top of the engine that sounds like a rod bearing but the sound is coming from the valve train. The knock goes away under load and is most pronounced when you hold the throttle at a high idle with no load on the engine. That is what is leading me to believe that it is not in the bearing or wrist pins. I also noticed the head gasket leaking coolant at the back of the head so I am tearing it down and I will chnage the head gasket. While I am tearing it down I was hoping to see an obvious sign of where the noise is coming from. At this point I have it ready to take the head bolts out but after breaking three tri squares I have ordered one made for head bolts.
So far I see nothing obvious but I was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue? I was thinking it may actually be an injector itself. I also noticed that the valve springs do not seem to very tight around the seats and I iwll need to inspect the valve guides when I get it apart. It looks very clean inside with no signs of gumming up. I did not think to visually check the oil pressure before I tore it down but at low RPM there was no noise so I dont think it is a weak oil pump but if there are known issues with them I would go the extra route to change it. I know this is a bit much for an introductory post and I will post in another section too.
Thanks in advance
