82 380sl Mechanics Quote Review Help

Hi All,

First time poster - many thanks to everyone for all the info I have gleaned from this forum.

I recently bought an 82 380sl with about 90k miles on it. Overall, the car is in great shape, but I took it to a mechanic and asked him to get me a price on anything he thought needed fixing. Most everything he came back with seemed reasonable, but a couple of things seemed high:

-replace the window seals around the pillar and hard top for $270 per side ($120 per side for the pillar and $150 per side for the top) - the seals need replacing, but $270 per side??
-replace subframe mounts for $550, lower aframe bushings for $525, and sway bar bushings for $195. I have read on this site that these are common fixes for the older Mercedes, but I have also read that it is a pretty simple process, so $1270 for the whole thing also struck me as high.

Any advice or input that anyone could offer would be much appreciated.

at $100 per hour plus parts this seems realistic.
A lot of labor goes into removing old parts and unexpected collateral problems from simple aging.

This is why some have trouble keeping an older car on the road.
Kinda pay big now for a new car and watch it degenerate,
or buy used and keep it newish, it cost$ both ways.

Much easier to just make the monthly payment on a new car.

My friend bought a 85' 380SL for $4,500 four years ago and freaked when he had a $1200 bill for routine maintenance items and labor to pass smog check. The O2 sensor was one of the cheap items.

I bought a one owner 1972 450SL for $4000 which had over $15k in maintenance expenses over its life.
and a one owner 1972 280SEL 4.5 sedan with the same expenses accumulated over 35 years,

Expensive fixes should be averaged over a long time to justify them.
A lot of us do it ourselves, there is no magic to this.

One more prove that cheap Mercedes to buy can be expensive to keep if you take it to shops.
If you know how to turn wrenches you can drive MB very cheap with help of this forum.
Works for me. I am spending less than $100 a year in parts while DIY.
