Introducing myself to the world of Mercedes
Alright, so my name is Kevin, I am a 19-year old part time college student from San Diego, CA. I drive a red 1976 W115 300D, which I received on my 18th birthday as my first car. It was purchased from a local, high-quality Mercedes repair shop (Dieter Fischer's Mercedes Service) where it had been a loan car for 28 years.
After 7 months of smooth running, the transmission went out. Having it repair at the shop my parents purchased it at, I was landed with a $3000 bill. Being a long time acquaintance of Mr. Fischer (was pre-school "boy"friend with his daughter) he was nice enough to offer me a job washing and detailing cars for $10/hr to pay off my debt.
Since that time (roughly 9 months) I've been finding out that this car, while the coolest and funnest thing to drive, is requiring much more costly maintenance than me or my parents had anticipated (a recent service which included an oil change, new brake pads, oil filter change, as well as two new tires ran me a total bill of $900 (which he said he gave me roughly 40%off)
Today as I was leaving work, I expressed to him my interest in doing cosmetic and interior restoration for older cars sitting around the shop. He readily accepted this idea and told me I can begin tomorrow, my first project being a yellow W123 300CD. I don't have the most knowledge of his process, and while I will seek help at work when needed, I plan on being very public on this forum in posting about my projects to seek advice, demonstrate my abilities, and eventually boast of my good work/offer advice to others.
I hope I can receive the welcome and help that I have seen on this forum (having come here to look up many problems I experience with my car or at work).
