c240 lost keys

Hi everyone. I'm interested in a 2001 benz C240 6speed. The seller doesn't have the keys, but has the title. How hard would it be to start it to see the mileage, test drive it, etc?

How much would it cost to make a key? And where?

Thanks

Impossible.

The owner whose name appears on the title goes to the dealer and produces the title and photo ID that matches the name. They pay for the key, the dealer orders it.

When it comes back in, the owner goes back with photo ID to pick it up.

How much it costs depends an awful lot on where you are. Down in Australia I've heard close to a grand, for example, across the US it's whatever the dealer wants to charge, in a range from about $220-$400.

That's it.

If the seller hasn't gone to the trouble to do that, I'd offer maybe $500 if the car otherwise appears sound, since I could probably net that after parting the car out and paying to haul the skeleton away as scrap...because my assumption would have to be the worst-case scenario, that the DAS has failed (and thus won't work even with a key) or the engine or transmission is toast, any of which would cost nearly as much (or more) to replace than the car is worth.

Good luck.

Sometimes it's an idiot repo agency for a lender. They grab the car thinking it's a Ford or Chevy.

Easy question to determine scammer, ask them why they didn't get a new key since the car is a boat anchor without it.
