Best diesel workhorse?

If you were to buy a used MB diesel to use as a daily driver with hard use ( 100-150 miles a day combined highway and city driving ) which model would you get? I am kinda in that place right now and would appreciate your input

A 126 for sure. Nothing rides as smooth. The 81-85 300 are believed to be the best I believe.

Keeping a Mercedes for 20 years is the stuff of fantasy.

In any event, you want the E-class, the taxicab of Germany. (You can't get a B-class)

Problem is, the USA versions will have 6s while the taxi drivers use those with 4s.

Problem with the 1980s models--besides the fact they're likely worn out and could very easily have been assaulted by a "greasecar" conversion--is that they are fuel hogs. You'll get better fuel mileage with today's gasoline cars, but today's diesels are something else again.

Thanks again for all your input! As much as i would love an diesel MB DD (pretty much treating it like a taxicab) i AM worried that the older cars may be worn out and then longevity becomes an issue. As far as the newer diesels i think i want to stay away from the Bluetec series as i would have to replace the Adblue cartridges often. (i drive 100k miles in 3-4 years) My 2006 E320 CDI i let my wife use as a DD (she does not drive far by Texas standards, less than 70 miles per day), and i use it as my weekend car.
I will explore the taxicab idea (best taxi workhorse), its just sad that a DD MB seems to be not for me.

Few years ago I sold W124 diesel to a guy who was making very long commute.
The car was in excellent condition with 320,000 miles on the odometer. Still with minimal luck can drive for next 10-15 years.
