dealership overpricing

I recently decided to diy my new, used 2006 MB E320 CDI (oil change etc.)as much as i could.(i know very little about diesel maintenance but i am willing to research and learn) so i went to get some parts at a local MB dealer. Since i did not know any better i paid $40 for a tool to remove the oil filter (twice as much i was to learn) but when i asked for a CDI dipstick, the parts guy quoted me over $200 US. Even a total newbie like me would have doubts about that! (I got one online for $5 plus shipping!) Is this common practice for the dealerships? What a total rip-off! I will NEVER buy anything from this dealership again! Prices of all their services are 4 times non MB dealerships.(japanese or american cars) Pls comment if this is to be expected or this dealersip is a total scam.

Pricey, indeed.
Even OEM Mercedes parts are available online at decent discounts; helps to be a DIY'er.
BTW, skip ebay; they're often higher than, etc

Do your research on the cdi, It depends on the parts on whether or not to buy dealer or not. General rule of thumb is to but all rubber and electrical components from the dealer. And to ask yourself 'if this part breaks will it cause serious damage?'. I personally don't mind dealer parts as I keep the receipts and still save money being a diyer

Dealers employ many people, they lease huge lots, giant buildings. They also provide free cappuccino to customers and ultra clean air freshened restrooms. If they sell the dipstick for $5 today, they'll go bankrupt tomorrow.

They replaced free espresso with coin-operated about 5 years ago in my local dealership, who seems to have biggest markups in the country.
Take your word on the restroom.
We have several topics about internet suppliers of OEM parts. Beside warehouses like germanstar and autohousaz, you will find lot of dealer having quite different internet prices. Shop around.
