Smile Education needed Certified pre owned

Hi All,

Looking at purchasing a 2007, C230 at a Benz dealer. It is not a Certified Pre Owned (CPO), which I find suspicious.

The sales guy has been very vague why it isn't a CPO car.

Finally got him to tell me they would CPO the car, but Mercedes would charge to dealership $1,500 to do that.

Is that correct, does Mercedes charge the dealer ship to CPO a car? And is it $1,500?

Thanks for your help. Dave

I never bought CPO car, but several members did with good satisfaction rate and this is the lamest excuse of not making the car CPO I have heard on this board.
Is the dealer offering other warranty on the car? If not I would just walk away.

The sales guy is offering a different warranty option. And really it is a better deal than the Benz CPO. It's $2,100 for 2 years, where the Benz is $1,500 for a year.

I was amazed that Benz would charge back the dealer, but the $$$ have to come from somewhere.

Thinking of having and indy shop do a pre purchase inspection, see what that looks like and go from there.

Thanks, Dave

Could be a number of reasons why it isn't a cpo. It might be different in the states, but in Canada we don't cpo cars that have been in an accident, if they have missing service history, or if the mileage is too high. It could be any number of reasons why they didn't cpo it, but I would be cautious buying from an mb dealer that won't cpo their own car. Our delaership won't sell a car that isn't cpo.

Don't buy the car, too many "gut feeling" issues it seems. I have also never heard of a MB dealer charging extra for a CPO car, not as a separate line item anyway, those cars are costlier that buying from a private seller, but to say it's $1,500 extra for a year? Doesn't add up. Also, Mercedes-Benz current tagline is "The Best or Nothing" but somehow this dealer has figured out how to top the brands extensive warranty, which in my case on my CPO W202 was totally non-hassle and a real lifesaver on several occasions. I'd agree, it has probably been in an accident, flood, or worse.
What dealership is this? It may save someone else a headache in the future by shopping around, especially if there are other local options.

I asked one dealer why they didn't CPO a particular car that qualified age/mileage. The salesman told me it costs the dealer so they have to raise the sale price on the car presumably making it harder to sell. But he said they are willing to certify it if the customer agrees to the higher price. I might have paid too much for mine but that warranty is as good as gold and more than paid for itself.
