ML 320 CDI tow vehicle

I bought my factory/dealer certified ML 320 CDI in June 2011 for dual purposes: to replace my 2006 Nissan Frontier, which I used primarily as a tow vehicle for my Casita camp trailer/RV AND my 1999 BMW 528i, which I am giving my son.

I have used the ML as a tow vehicle on two outings, each ~ 1000 mi., round trip. I was hoping for better overall mileage, but find it equivalent to the Nissan I had (14 - 16 mpg) EXCEPT on my last two-day 400+ mi. return: first day, 14 mpg; second day 19 mpg. The difference: first day 20 mph headwind, 60 mph, second day, no head wind, 55 mph. I used cruise control.

Anyway, I'd be interested in any other ML owners experiences with towing RV's, especially ML's with diesel engines.

I'm also a believer in the good value of buying factory certified MB's and BMWs.

I joined looking for just that sort of information too. On paper the ML is rated to tow 7200 pounds. This trailer is 4600 empty and about 6000 loaded with dirtbikes and gear. Curious if anyone is using an ML to tow similar? Worried first about tail wagging the dog, but also about MPG. The F-250 shown loafs along as this is less than half its rating for bumper pull.
