Smile engine oil leak

hi guys, i have a little car mechanic question to ask, please help me out

i just picked up a pre-owned star certified 2008 ML320 CDI.

After driving it for some hours, i parked my car and after a while, noticed a black pool of oil under the front of my car.

I popped the hood and saw engine oil all over the place. I took out the engine oil filter cap, and re-tightened it. For the rest of the evening, the leaking seemed to have stopped.

Next morning, i still noticed a pool of oil under my car.

Took it to the dealer.
The service advisor took a look at the car, drove it around, cleaned up the mess.

His diagnosis is that either the cap was loose, or there was spilling during adding motor oil. In either case, oil was being heated up during driving, and flowing down like water and splashing around under the hood which casued the mess. He cleaned up the mess, and said the car is fine, and the only thing that he could do more is to leave the car to him and he clean it for a couple more days, but the car is fine.

The sales admitted that while showing to me how to add motor oil when i was picking up the car, he might not have tightened the filter cap enough. (the engine compartment was clean when i saw it at the time).

I took the car home and going to monitor if there is anymore leaking for a couple of days.

Here is my question:
1) what if leaking continues?

2) I am hopeful that the leaking will stop, but i am very curious to know if the spilling and oil splashing around under the hood while driving could cause any real damage to my engine or my car?

Thanks for any input.

Assuming they are telling the truth about not getting the cap tight, that could be all it was. The underbody panels can collect quite a bit, then it drips out later, even after the source is stopped. Just keep an eye on it and see.

Good luck.

Ya, so my car/engine is fine right? I was really afraid that oil spilling out while the car was running/engine was hot might damage something.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, your engine will be fine. It may need cleaning for a few more times, but it will be just fine.

cool~how important is the cleaning? the dealer already cleaned it up yesterday once. They said further cleaning needs a couple of days. Its ok if i just ignore it right? eventually its all gonna dry up or drip down i guess?

If they did a good cleaning that will be fine. You may smell the oil burning off hard to reach spots the next few days. If after a week you still smell it, have them clean it again. Yes, eventually it will be just a distant memory.
