New, and shopping

Well, we're not exactly new to Mercedes. Owned a big white 250S sedan 1970-73, then got into SAABs and never looked back. Forty years later we're changing makes (for obvious reasons, if you read the papers). Mercedes is a candidate, along with BMW, Volvo, and the usual suspects. Just doing the research at this point.....

Welcome to the forum. Have an 02 S60 that my son is now driving and just got an 07 C230. Both brands are good cars. Coming from Saab you already know that maintenance on these cars is not cheap, but they'll last forever. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Are you looking for a coupe, sedan, SUV?

I suspect it'll be a sedan. No matter what we buy, it will be FWD or AWD, so for MB, that means 4Matic. The good news is that there are a lot of late model CPO E350 4Matics at a local dealer. The problem with Volvos is that I have already been effectively warned off by several people (on the Volvo forum, no less) who say not to expect the driving experience with a Volvo that we've been having with SAAB- to stick with MB or BMW.

OTOH, the last Mercedes I drove was (I believe) an R-class. Of course it was a nice car, with all the features we're used to in SAAB and then some, but I think an SUV or a crossover is going to have too high a center of gravity for the driving experience we like. When I drove the R-class, I looked up the specs, and was appalled at the weight when going 4Matic. I am driving an '04 SAAB 9-5 wagon right now, which is about 3500 pounds EW, and I'd be pushing 5K in an E-class 4Matic. No real mystery at the somewhat lackluster fuel efficiency.....
