ESP BAS in ML320 2001 - Danger - uncontroled breaking
I write this post to alert you guys and ask you to call Mercedes corporate office if you have this issue.
Last night my ML320 2001 driver side front brake engaged and ESP/BAS light came on. This braking action made my truck turn into the incoming traffic line and in front of semi. I was able to jerk the wheel to the right and avoid being crashed by semi.
I just called MB corporate office and told them about it. They said i will hear back in 24 hrs and offered free towing to dealership for diagnosis.
I feel that this is a serious safety issue and did noticed that good number of people on this forum do have ESP/BAS related problems.
It is very serious as there is some type of failure that makes the break engage.
I will be updating you on the issue and MB's responses.
If it does not lead to any serious resolution - i will be contacting Consumer Protection Safety Commission with as much data as i can gather here and on other news groups to make the CPSC force MB to recall all those ESP/BAS units that have 15th pin soldering issue (i am assuming that it is the cause of the problem).
My all brakes, rotors and sensors are new. Stop light switch should be only related to cruise control not disengaging properly - and not to ESP/BAS - according to the recall information.
I wander how many accidents actually did happened b/c of this issue and ended up attributed to driver loosing control of the vehicle.
Please don't ignore it - it can be deadly. If your ESP/BAS light turns on have it inspected immediately and let MB Corporate know about it.
