Someone much sharper than I said, "A fool and his money are soon parted". (Ben Franklin?) Under the spell of a sudden urge I bid on a 1979 SLC that I found on a charity auction. I was the high bidder and am now awaiting the arrival of the car... tensely awaiting as all I have to go on are photos and a report from the charity that their mechanics had driven the car and found it roadworthy.

An MB sight unseen? Funny, I always thought I was smarter than that?

I have completed ground up restorations on MGs and Triumphs and consider myself fairly knowledgeable on things mechanical but I may be over my head with this 450. Wait and see now methinks!

Now that everyone is grinning thinking, "Boy, is HE in for it!", I just wanted to say hello. I'm an older fellow who has been in love with the automobile since birth. One that really should have known better.

Firstly, I think your consideration for charity is a very nice gesture.

My first concern for your sight-unseen purchase is the word "roadworthy"...if that was the word their mechanics actually used. Seems to me, "roadworthy" could mean just about anything. (If the car really belongs in a salvage yard, and there is a "road" that leads to the salvage yard, could it still be called "roadworthy"?) Hopefully it's a pleasant surprise, and any issues that are present can be easily addressed by you as a restorer.

I happen to have great respect for older life-long car nuts, like yourself! I'm a car nut myself, and somewhat of a history buff, and so I've found that there are few things in life I enjoy more than hours of conversation with someone of your experience.

Anyway, best of luck with the car...

Hope isn't always fleeting

Thanks for the kind thoughts... it's always been my experience that good fortune isn't always fleeting. I hope this 450 SLC is one of those experiences. If nothing else I can just park it in the driveway and admire it right? Even with those ugly extended bumpers (thanks Washington) the 450 is a beautiful car!
