MB C230 transmission down shift clunk noise

97 C230. 140K miles. Cluck shift cluck sound sometimes, for example, when accelerate at up hill incline going up on ramp into freeway.

Dealer report said: found fault in shift value assembly, rough shift only on 3 to 2 downshift. Found transmission fluid dark. Do not understand this -> "Performed short test, found stored codes for selector lever is implausible, communication with engine module, and reverse gear/park lock solenoid fault." Normally would recommend a valve body, but mileage is high. Not confident this will fix the shift issue without causing clutches to slip. Dealer said : best to replace entire transmission.

But for now, can still drive without much problem.

Any one with similar problem and how did you deal with it?

With lack of maintenance, transmission dies around 100K-150K miles, I think.
>>Found transmission fluid dark.
That's the first bad news but it's cheap, easy to correct. If it's my car, I'd flush/change the fluid to see how it goes after.

Any easy instructions on how to flush the transmission fluid?
Is this a job for the mechanics?
I know there is an opening hidden in the left side (see the engine standing in from of car) engine compartment, covered, but without a dip stick (intentionally not provided by MB).

Why does the MB dealer saying it would make the transmission worse to replace the transmission fluid?

There was some debate about that. If you asked the dealer why, their answer would not make sense. Anyway, whenever I bought a used car, I'd replace all fluids, filter(s) that I could to start my own maintenance schedule from day 1. It cost some money but I took control of the car. For your car, if you're the do it yourself type, go to the forum for your car, ask how to flush, replace transmission fluid. If you're not the DIY, bring the car to a trustworthy local shop.

OK. Toke to "Elite Mercedes" shop and replace transmission fluid. Fluid was dark. But found no metal or chip or anything funny. It was $270.

Test drive. Still rough down shift from 3 to 2. Sigh.

Sorry to hear the fresh fluid did not solve the problem, but at that mileage it needed that anyway.

Check around on the W202 forum found under the sedans heading. It might need a new valve body and I wouldn't worry about that damaging the clutches.

C230 2000 Transmission or differential clunk noise when slowing down?

Hi,

I am new to the forum, and will appreciate any assistance.

I have a 2000 C230 Kompressor and it has 155,000 miles. Today when I was driving home I went to stop at a red light (was going about 40-45 mphs) and when I applied the brakes I felt a clunk when the transmission downshifted at about 10-15 mphs.

I know it is not the brakes or wheels, it has to do with either transmission or maybe differential? Any suggestions?

Note: Transmission shifts fine while during driving.

Thanks for all the help!!!!

toni03103, seem same rough down shift problem we have.

When "Elite Mercedes" toke us for a test drive, he knew exactly how to make the car down shift to make that clunk sound. Read Fletcher Jones Mercedes dealer tech report above about the shift valve assembly. They said $3500 for new transmission.

Replace the part not the transmission. If it goes bad, that's a very small chance but THEN you can buy a new one, but otherwise there is no reason to do otherwise unless you just happen to feel like paying your dealer's boat payment this month. Having said that, almost all W202's have a clunky transmission but for some reason it seems more evident in the c230's. Mine had it from day one and never was a problem, why don't you guys try putting the "W/S" button on the shifter into "W" and see if the clunk is still evident.

Fletcher Jones Mercedes (Dealer) and Elite Mercedes (Ind. with high Yelp rating) said openning the transmission to replace the shift value assembly is same similar cost. Because they don't work inside the transmission, they just order and replace with re-build transmissions. Is this correct?

By the way, in California, we hardly ever use "W". But since we have this clunk noise, we change from S to W for few months. Same result. They said, W just start at 2nd gear.
