Where does everyone get the Ws from again for their model? I don't get what the W stands for and how people know this stuff? It almost seems common knowledge on the board though??!!!??!! Also, would love to know about the parts from Germany. I had someone back into my car, and crush my light on the driver's side. Well, when they replaced, I now have a crystal clear light on the one side, and a 12 year old cover of the light on the passenger side. I want to spruce it up, but the plastic cover is $593 according to the repair shop. If I could find a way to get that cheaper, that would be a BIG help!

W is the start of the Chassis number or style. A 1999-2006 S Class is a W220 chassis. If you wikipedia Mercedes Benz you can learn a ton there about the company and chassis numbers.
Other car companies do the same. For instance the Porsche 911 is known as the 911, 996, 997 etc. This tells what age or years of production the car is. The Mercedes S Class has been made for many years, so the chassis tells suppliers what range you are looking at. The current model S Class is known as the W221
