For $10k you can by ca 1998 E300dt with 174 HP engine.
Or 2000+ gas Mercedes that will still make better mpg than this one.

I already took this car off a family members hands and I really like the body it feels like driving a tank haha. I dont have any illusions of it being fast like a mustang I just would like some more power, some places ive searched they can get between 200-400 horses

Yeah and 50 mpg to couple.
Mercedes is famous for tuning their engines very well. Not many chances of improving it unless you start putting superchargers and very expensive stuff. Usually it is cheaper to buy AMG model of the same car if you want better performance.

Your car is one of the best M-B's ever made and the 5 cylinder diesel is very sound. If you can't do it yourself, take the car to a mechanic that can work on older Mercedes-Benzes. Be sure to do your research for what a mechanic is able to do. Then have the valves adjusted, everything lubed and a thorough service completed. With 10K you can do a lot and should be able to bring the car up to specs if it is sound to begin with. It is also worth your time to research what a service check should include and give it to your mechanic.
The car looks good, if it is a good one it is worth a lot more than 1,000.
