Take the nice old E-classes from the 1980s for an example ...
W124 = 4 dr sedan
S124 = station wagon
C124 = coupe
V124 = long wheelbase limousine
Yeah, the CL is a Cxxx for sure because it's a coupe.
And, you'll see R on, for example, the R230 where most of them sold in USA are SL550. The SLKs are now R172
124, 216, 230, etc., NEVER appear on the bodywork--it's a chassis designator for internal use
And, all today's E-class sedans/wagons are W212 or S212 REGARDLESS whether they're E350s or E550s or E63s.
You aren't going to see M272 on your V6 motor either.
