Thanks for the suggestion. It is a direct approach but I can not carry out the job as I am not an experienced car mechanic.

I understand that if found to be with problem, the instrument cluster needs to be replaced in one piece and it is expensive.

I can try to do the drain test as suggested by you and may be I can start with those fuses which are connected to the instrument cluster, to see whether I can score right away? The mechanic will not have to patience to do that!

Thanks for your continuous support!

The draw test is simple to do, you do not need to be a mechanic to figure this one. Make sure everything is switched off and you will need to keep the drivers door open to remove fuses, so click the door latch into the locked position, the car will assume the door is closed and interior lights will go out.

Thanks...very kind of you!

I will proceed with the drain test and see what I can come up with.

Dear Eric,

The meter I have is too small! It only measures up to 500 DCmA so the needle struck the stopper.

Nevertheless, below the steering column, I found a defective fuse
No.9 ( According to Vito's Manual: Clock, flashing turn indicators/hazard warning flashers )! It is not yet completely broken but the plastic enclosure melted badly.

The fuel and temperature gauge are back to their idle position after the fuse was removed but if I put back a new 15A fuse, these went up again!

Do you have a clue?

Rgds, Henry

IN YOUR DIAGRAM, IT IS THE FUSE F17! The manual I have is for VITO but the sequence and description matches with your diagram.

It is this fuse, but it affects more than the items it is supposed to protect which means you have a wiring problem, a short between wires, possibly two or more wires melted together. You will need the assistance of a mechanic now to start pulling things down and inspecting the wiring.

Dear Eric,

I agree with you. Hopefully the instrument cluster is OK as it is expensive and not easy to come by!

Once again, thank you and have a nice evening. I hope that you and your family enjoy your time in China.

Rgds, Henry Hsu

As the mechanic is busy with other orders, the earliest slot is next week's Wednesday so I am left thinking about what to do.....

Dear Eric,

I just want to share with you that my Dash problem has gone!

This morning, I pulled out the fuses ( one by one ) below the steering column
to see whether these two gauges ( fuel and temperature ) will fall to zero but to no avail. Then, I took the car for a short drive hoping to recharge the battery and when I came back, the dash problem has suddenly gone! All four warning lights are back and the two gauges fall back to zero, once the car is switched off!

immediately, I drove the car to the battery shop and with headlights and aircon on, the shop owner confirms that the alternator is charging normally so for the first time in 2 weeks, I left the battery cable on because I want to see whether there is still power drain-out while the car is stationary.

I do not know whether my action this morning has reset the on-board computer and cleared it of bad memory! There may still be some wiring problem but is it wasting of time and money to follow up while the faults are gone? Furthermore, I do not want to create new problems by letting the mechanic to go into wirings which must have been modified over the years, by the previous owner, before I took over the car in the Year 2005.

Your valuable comments would be very much appreciated!
