HELP Please! Key Fob not working/ alarm won't disarm

1998 E320 Wagon:
Key fob not working, can't disarm alarm, wipers, window controls & central locking won't work....suggestions?
In the middle of a crazy NW winter snowstorm my key fob suddenly stopped working! Took the kids sledding, worked fine when I locked the car, but 45 minutes later when we went to leave the doors wouldn't unlock with the fob. Used the mechanical key to open drivers door, which set off the alarm. Fob wouldn't work to disarm, neither did putting electronic key in ignition. Car starts...drove home with window down, alarm blaring and lights flashing. Once engine is off, it goes through 2 alarm cycles, then turns off unless I open a door.
Help please! Husband is out of town and I can't even get the car to a mechanic to check it out due to snow!

I have tried:
new batteries in Fob
re-synching fob according to directions found here
key in ignition and resetting central locking
disconnected neg battery connection for 15+ minutes
checked for blown fuses (and was able to pull the horn so at least it wasn't honking while I tried to trouble shoot!)

Does anybody have suggestions of what else to try? Is there a reset code (we have an aftermarket radio)? Is the alarm connected to wipers, windows not working?
Thank you

The first thing I would try is the spare key.

That is really bizarre, though. I've read a lot of W210 threads and can't recall one like that.

If the spare key works, at least you know it's just the one key.

Good luck.

Try putting the fob at the bottom of a bowl of dry rice overnight. Take the batteries out first and leave the fob dis-assembled until morning.

Top five reasons I posted in your topic:

1. You're talking about god, there has never been any god of any kind. EVER!

2. I just have a general dislike of you.

3. I am trying to tell you how to fix your Mercedes and you are not listening.

4. I'm flirting with Jody.

5. You're just to dumb to own a Mercedes, and should go buy a Honda.

Not to nit pick but how did you lower that window if the window controls don't work?

Thank you for the responses, please keep them coming!

-I will try the rice idea...the fob was in my pocket while I was standing in the cold...could have gotten some moisture in it.

-Unfortunately, I only have one key. Bought the car used from a dealership back in April.

-When the mechanical key is held in the open or lock position it opens or closes the drivers window. This was something I discovered once I was already home. I couldn't figure that out myself at first

The problem is that along with the alarm issue, none of the interior controls work! Even the interior lights come on, but can't be turned off manually. This was the case before disconnecting the battery, so that isn't the cause.

Update- just went to see if the car fairies had come in the night to fix things and decided to fiddle with the the mechanical keys again.

No change in the driver's door (except that now the window is NOT going up...I had left it down yesterday so I could just reach in without setting off alarm).

Tried locking and unlocking the back hatch with mechanical key and the alarm is now off! Hurray! Except still no interior controls working, and I already mentioned driver's window is down Fob still not working (haven't tried the rice yet)

Is it worth disconnecting the battery again to see if it resets the computer? Or do I just need to take it to a shop with a code reader that can reset something?

Thanks again, suggestions are greatly appreciated

It won't hurt anything to disconnect the battery again, you never know, it might just help.

Two things to check: the battery and surrounding areas for moisture, as well as the under-shifter (center console) area.

Moisture in either can wreak havoc with several systems.

Oh, and your windows may actually be working from the switches, but they need to be re-synched after disconnecting the battery. They are five-position (including the center off position), if you move them just a little bit that is up or down. If you press them all the way that is "one-touch" and until they are synchronized, they don't move at all in those positions. Most people just mash on them without realizing it...unless they have disconnected the battery or read their manual.

Still puzzled! Contacted Mercedes service department...one mechanic said sounds like Convenience Control Computer, but I can't find any info about this. Hmm.

Told I just need to bring it in for a diagnostic, nobody seeks to have heard of this sort of thing before...but I can't take it in until the rain stops, ugh.

Here is the latesest in the event ANYBODY out there has experienced this:

-Key Fob stopped working suddenly (new batteries and drying it out, in case it was a moisture issue)
- Alarm is off, but will not reset , central lock not working
-loss of all "convenience controls"- wipers and blinkers (although high beam on the same control works), sunroof and window controls won't operate, mirrors and seat controls not working, only the rear light in the wagon comes on when opening the doors (although interior lights work with the buttons)

I think I will start a new l\thread with these new symptoms, but if ANYONE has a suggestion it is appreciated. I am afraid I am going to end up with a ridiculous shop charge and have it turn out to be something simple!

It doesn't sound simple. The shop diagnostic should only cost about $100 (1 hour charge although it will probably take less time than that). Have you checked for moisture around the battery?
