Unhappy Blowing smoke

I have an '08 ML350 with 24,000 miles on it. After a long run at steady hiway speed, if I punch it, it blows out a cloud of white-blue smoke. The longer the run the larger the cloud. After a run of 2 hours the cloud can stop traffic.

Following a long run, if I punch it to clear it then park, it smokes a bit on start up.

In city driving or hiway driving through terrain that causes a lot of shifting there is not a wisp of smoke.

The car has stored codes for camshaft timing errors but the CEL has never come on in the 3000 miles that I've owned the car. MB think that these codes may be from sludge from lack of oil changes. The maintenance was seriously neglected by the previous owner to the extent that there is a flag on the warranty. MB ran terraclean through and did 2 oil changes and I've changed the oil twice since then.

No one can tell me what is wrong.

Remove one of the cam covers and I will bet the oil has vulcanized and there is serious valve guide wear. If so this engine will need a complete rebuild. Vulcanized oil looks like a thick rubber coating.
