Stealership at it's best, or a simple mistake?

I took my 2003 W211 in to have the sunroof looked at. 2 hours later the tech came out with the motor and told me that it was toast. They wanted just shy of $1000 to fix it. I figured that for the price, it could wait until it was warm outside.

The next day I was at work and one of my friends mentioned using a bore scope to look for the part numbers (rather than disassemble the headliner) to see if I could find one cheaper. 10 minutes later, we were putting the scope up into the manual opening slot.

What a surprise. It appears that the dealership didn't bother to install the motor, nor did they mention to me that they were going to leave it out or at very least give it back to me.

I called the dealership and spoke to my sales guy. He called back later saying that they didn't install it as a courtesy and that the tech was using it to try to find a cheaper price for me.

I called BS and told them I wanted the motor, and that their process was deceptive at very least.

My buddy said I should call the police to report a theft since they didn't even bother to let me know what they had done.

What say you???

BTW - found one on ebay for $70.00...

I would just ask for your motor back since they apparently still have it. I don't know what to say about their not putting a "ruined" motor back in but they definitely should have asked you what you wanted them to do with it and kept you in the loop. IMHO calling the police should be a last ditch effort if everything else fails.

Calling the police to report the "theft" of something that was basically trash...I guess, in a low-crime city that might work.

I agree that involving the police would have to be a last ditch effort. It really pisses me off though that this would happen. So much for integrity.

Just curious, what did they charge you for what they did and is the sunroof sealed back up properly? You obviously don't want the thing to leak ruining the headliner and who knows what else.

I bought the car last month and we (both myself and the dealership) never opened the sunroof. As a result, the roof was already closed, and since it has been so cold, I didn't think much of it until a few days ago.

I negotiated them looking at it since we both missed it. They thought it worked, and I didn't check. It would have been $125/ hour for the labor though. Probably around $200 given the time they took.

I can't help but think that this could have been handled better from the beginning. I would expect things to go like this...

Me: Hi, I got home and noticed you didn't put the sunroof motor back in my car, what's up with that?
Dealer: We still have it if you want it.
Me: Ok, does it function at all?

If the answer is YES: Ok, well I'm going to swing by later so you can re-install it so i'll have something to use in the meantime.
If the answer is NO: Ok, well I'm going to swing by later and pick up the part, thanks!

Either case there's no confrontation and everybody leaves friends. Sometimes we let our passion for our cars get the better of us, no disrespect to you my friend.

Well... I have not seen it all, but from what I have seen -it would not be the first time when the diagnosed motor is good.
Will wait for the outcome.

I got my replacement motor in the mail last night. I'm planning on installing it today - we will see what happens.

DirectLA - there was no confrontation, just a simple, but direct phone call to the salesman. I let him handle the rest.

I still don't believe their story about leaving it out as a courtesy. I personally think the tech was being lazy, and the salesman was told a story too.

What upsets me is the simple fact that they peed on my back yet told me it was rain. I have no real emotional connection with this car as of now (although I am really enjoying it), and I have been around long enough to have learned that being an ass at the get go wont solve any problems either.

The motor is in and the panoramic sunroof is working great. $70.00 and about 30 minutes of my time.

Still no motor from the dealer though.
