What is wrong with mercedes....!

General rant - in this day and age why on earth to MB want to charge $100 for a DVD with servicing information in it. My CLK 55 has developed a number of electrical faults and information on the electrics are scarce. The car only has 20k miles on it from new, it can not be hard to make stuff that is more reliable than that.

So Mercedes, please stop being a dinosoar, we are in an information world with the internet at our fingertips. Get yourselves into the 21st century and put all your technical documentation on line so your customers and community have half a chance of understanding and maintaing the cars that you expect us to buy for a premium....but somehow now appear to consistently fail to deliver on overall quality....

If you are minded to send me a CD with the technical docs for my car I would very much like to receive one....

rant over....

I don't know of any car manufacturer who is terribly open with their proprietary technical information. That being said, $100 for a service DVD is pretty reasonable.

As I have often said to people at my company, just because no one else does it, does not make it the wrong thing to do. Bottom line is Mercedes are a premium car manufacturer and charge premium prices for their cars, services and after market parts, there is no need to extract another $100 from each customer to allow them to get information that is pretty vital to have access to, especially when the warranty expires and MB wash their hands of any further issues.

If I ever buy another MB again (which I am very unlikely to do based on the build quality of the car I have experienced) I would absolutely insist that the service information DVD be provided with the car from the off - for no charge - something I am sure the dealer would do to get you to part with with £70,000.....

Have you actually looked around for other sources? I see eBay sellers offering the disc-based repair manual for less than $15.

Mainstream sellers are getting around $60 for the owner's manual, so $100 for a full repair manual from these sellers seems pretty reasonable.

BTW: Completing your profile, including year, model and location, can prove very useful to those who might be inclined to offer you help.

Im still baffled at how people get so pissed about dealer prices. look around the dealer and think about their overhead. 'yota, honda, and acura parts are just as expensive these days and dealers charge around the same per hour so why are people ticked about their $50k-200k cars being expensive to fix.

I don't think access to that info is particularly "vital" since only a very small part of MB owners do their own work, especially if we're talking about those who buy new MBs.

Absolutely true.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

I still remember about 25 years ago I spend $58 for Oldsmobile repair manual. Great book, weighting about 10 lb, but what it would make in today's dollars? $300?
Per my experience MB parts bought on the net are one of the cheapest.
I just bought orings for my Ford Truck. How about $20 per oring? It is a big 2" dia sucker, but set of 4 orings and 2 small gaskets for oil cooler retails close to $200.
I made a topic here few years ago, where a kit with 2 pc 10 mm bolts, 5 small orings and 2 miniature clips for Ford cost me over $80 with a discount.
Open your eyes a bit wider.
MBUSA is not a charity, but let us drive luxury cars for very low cost.

I have to chuckle when Mercedes owners get "cheap."

"cheap" is the word with several meanings.
Mercedes is the cheapest brand to drive I ever owned and I owned tens of cars including 9 MB . The cars hold the value, so if you buy used, keep it up and fix few issues PO did have -you will sell it for more than purchase price.
