Question intermittent mystery noise

We have been driving our 1985 300TD for 4 years, very pleased with the vehicle. Two weeks ago the car developed a terrible noise. It is intermittent and very loud, something like a jackhammer. It comes from the rear of the car and only when the driver accelerates. We've had the tires rotated--after being told it was very needed and would address the noise. It did, for 30-40 miles. Next day, it was back. We drove the car anyway because the tire expert said there was no safety issue and it could take a while [up to 2 months!] for the tires to smooth out and the sound to resolve. We spoke to the place that sold us the tires and they concurred with this. After a week, we took it back to the tire expert who drove the car and heard the noise and said, this is serious, your axle is popping in and out. We drove away, the noise had stopped again. We arranged to drive the car an hour away to our usual mechanic [who sold us the car]. Halfway there, the noise began again. When we pulled over to call AAA, we were in front of a transmission specialist. They drove the car--no noise. They lifted the car and examined it carefully, removing the rear tires, pushing and pulling, and could find no reason for such a noise. The noise went away again for 70+ miles and it is back again. Anyone recognize this situation? We live on an unpaved road. Could a piece of gravel be causing this nightmare? This is a very loud, metallic, anxiety-producing sound that causes pedestrians to turn and stare.
