Backup Camera switcheroo

I posted this under a Chicago oriented thread, but I thought the general MB population might have an answer too.

I purchased a 2008 CLS550 from Hoffman MB in a near NW suburb of Chicago, and the aftermarket manager informed me that they could install a "factory" backup camera. It wasn't cheap, but I prefer mostly factory or AMG equipment, so I ponied up a bunch of cash and had it installed. When I saw it, I immediately knew they are a bunch of bold-faced liars. It's a crappy aftermarket system with a giant camera stuck to the bottom of the license plate. The picture quality is mediocre at best and it barely has a decent picture in low light. I can tell that the high impedance output from the camera/processor board barely matches the head unit. My 2009 Honda Accord XLEV6 had a system that rocked compared to this piece of sh@! It was already too late to pitch a hissy fit over the deception. It is installed and I'm stuck with it.

My question: Are there better cameras that can be added to an aftermarket system, or is the quality of picture mostly in the circuit board/processor that they stuck in the head unit?

If anyone has good info on the topic, I would be very appreciative.

I'd love to replace the camera with a more subtle looking one, but I'm not sure if anything else will work.

I haven't done it myself, but the expert seems to be Mid City Engineering, here in Chicago. See the following link: Mid City Engineering | Mid City Engineering They're located at roughly the intersection of Milwaukee and Elston.

I priced out the back-up camera. They popped out the head unit of my 06 R500 and discovered that I'd need to swab out the head unit to install an integrated back-up camera. I may ultimately do it, but at the time the cost of the swap out put me over the dollar tipping point.

Best of luck,
