Will a 2005 c230 ballast work in a 2006 c230?

Hi,
I have a 2006 C230 Sport with corroded ballasts (control modules) due to leaky lighting units. I know it's the ballasts because the high beams and fog lights still work, just not the low beams. All fuses are fine.

A friend of mine gave me his 2005 *working* headlights this weekend, including ballasts and light bulbs. I tried replacing the corroded passenger side ballast with the new working 2005 ballast, but the low beams are still not lighting. Why? What could be the problem? Both have the same part #s...?

Any help would be appreciated.

Your headlight relay might be suspect. By that matter, could even be your headlight switch.

Thanks - I'll look into it. I'm getting ready to just take it it a shop though.

Last time I took it to the dealer, they said it was the driver's side ballast and leaky lighting unit (at that time, only the driver's side light was out. They passenger side worked fine). My Uncle and I switched the passenger's side ballast out with the non-working driver's side ballast, but because it was such a pain to switch them back, I kept the working ballast in the driver's side, which again, leaked and corroded the working ballast. I had no low beams for a while, and now have new lights with working ballasts. But again, trying both ballasts in the passenger side which worked before, it still doesn't work. I would understand there would be a possible issue for the driver's side switch or relay. But the passenger side worked before with a working ballast...?

Logically since both the 2005 parts and your 2006 parts are both from the same W203 chassis so they "should" be interchangeable. But on the other hand it has been reported several times that MB changes subtle things within chassis runs. Maybe it's time you checked the EPC (electronic parts catalog) to see if all the numbers match.

Agreed that with one side working and the other not it's hard to believe that your switch or the relay is at fault.

Thanks Musikmann. All the numbers on the ballasts match up. Where can I get an English version of the EPC?

Also - this may have nothing to do with it - there are two wires (brown and green, covered by a rubber end/plug) that are not plugged into anything and are loose (on passenger side). But I can't find anywhere to plug them into on the lighting unit. I initially thought they were to my fog light, but again, the fog lights and high beams work fine. It's just the low beams that are out.

Thanks -- I think you may be right about the relay! (Tested the power sources today with a meter and only 2 of 3 read anything). But how do I know which one controls the headlights? I looked at the MB dealer's diagram, but only fuses are identified, no relays.

Further, where can I buy one? I tried going to the dealer today to test the ballast (just to double check, as I hear it's a common issue for c230s) but they quoted me waaayyyy too much, just to take a look at it!

Thanks for any help.
