Private Motor Pool in Maine
Hi. I'm in Portland, Maine. Over the years, I have acquired a few MB vehicles.
I have a 1979 300 TD wagon in immaculate shape. I believe it was the first one ever registered in Maine. My parents purchased it new and took delivery at the Sindelfingen factory.
I liked that car so much that in 1985 I bought a used German spec 1983 300 TD Turbo from a dealer in Karlsruhe, Germany. That car gave me great service until last year. It sat outside for over a year while I was in Iraq. Although the body looks good, there is a lot of rust underneath. The brake lines are shot. It has other issues, too. The motor starts and runs great. I'd like to part that one out. I have both Euro and US headlights for it.
Next, I have a German spec 1980 350 SL roadster that I bought from the same dealer in Karlsruhe shortly after I bought the 300 TD Turbo. When that car was imported to the US, the importer stole the Euro headlights. I just bought a new set for it.
Finally, I have a 2002 E 320 4Matic station wagon with a towing receiver. While Benz of America doesn't recommend towing with this vehicle, it handles the job with ease. Since February, 2009, I've regularly pulled a wide flatbed Worthington trailer hauling a six wheel Max Buffalo amphibious ATV dump truck. The towed weight is just about the 2,000 lb maximum capacity of the receiver.
Those are the MB's in my fleet. I also have a sweet 1971 Olds Delta Royale convertible with a newly rebuilt 455 motor. I've had that puppy since 1977.
A few years ago, I bought a 1982 VW Rabbit convertible. It runs great and is pretty economical to operate, although it requires a bit more maintenance than my other vehicles.
The last vehicle in my motor pool is a 1987 4x4 Dodge Power Ram 50 pickup truck--the same vehicle as the Mitsubishi Mighty Max. I bought that one from my sister in 2000. We rebuilt a lot of it last year so it would pass inspection. I use it to plow snow, among other things.
