Benz wanna be

Hi, I sent a couple of posts but read a bit of information on Benzworld and it looks like I need to introduce myself as a new forum user.

I don't own a Benz but my wife and I want to buy a slk 350 in silver with black interior. We are looking at a used one at a MB dealer in Ontario. It is a 2005 and it looks to be in very good shape. I don't know much about MB cars other than they look good and I want one. We have an Audi A3 as a daily driver so this will be for fun. The question I have is simple. How do I find out if VIN #WDBWK56F55F049369 and what the dealer says is the engine number 27296330025197
is within the manufacture dates for problem oil consumption or not. I asked the salesman and he said the car was only ever in for routine maintenance. Not sure if I should take a chance on this car or keep looking?

Dale

It is a 272 engine yes, but what is this oil consumption problem you speak of? Never heard of this before.

If you have not heard of an oil consumption problem with some of these cars that could be a good thing. I read about it on SLK World forum pages. There are a few posts from different people with such a problem. They seem to have narrowed it down to faulty pistons and rings in early 3.5 engines (2005). The engine numbers they speak of are 2729xx30058705 and earlier. Some of the people complaining about this problem said their cars burned up to 3 liters of oil between an oil change. I hope the service manager from the MB dealership calls me today and says this car is fine. I'd like to buy it now so I can drive it home before winter hits.

This sort of thing only affects a small proportion of engines and is dependent on how they are serviced and looked after, sports car owners tend to drive them hard you know.

But there is a real problem with this engine, and here are a few links;

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/gene...+balance+shaft

Trust me the list goes on, the failure was fixed on the 08 models.

Make sure the balance shaft has already been changed, if so you are good to go.

ERIC.

Thanks, I will put that on my list of questions for the service manager when he calls.
I have to go to work now but will check out those links as well when I get home.

Well I spoke with the MB dealership service department who said the car has had half a dozen warranty claims and regular maintenance. One of the power window motors quit, some interior parts replaced, the brakes needed attention and a few small other problems. No record of complaints or testing for oil consumption or any c e l issues or balance shaft problems. The service department person I spoke to said the car was recently given a full check up and nothing came up. The car was not serviced at their dealership all the time but he checked the warranty claims and still nothing major showed up. Car is for sale as is with no warranty. Maybe this is a mid week built car and not a hung-over Monday one???

Just checked Warranty Direct for extended coverage on this car. Wow, $2643.00 for 20K and 13 months with a $0 deductible.
