Please forgive my "noobness", I have read a lot of posts and have learned a tremendous amount about my car and Mercedes in general. Im still learning a lot everyday.......that being said..

What the hell is "LIMP MODE"???? All I know is that is sounds bad and I dont want it happening to me!

There is a page in my WIS that desribes it very well. In brief, it is caused by an unexpected input to the auto transmission control system, (faulty sensor, for example) such that damage might be caused if you were allowed to continue to drive normally. A sporadic fault might trigger LH mode, and after the reset, not return for some time. Other faults that re-occur immediately will cause the LH mode to persist until the fault is eventually resolved.

So this 'facility' allows you to get home and deal with the problem later.

I'm not sure whether it exactly meets the technical definition, but it occurred to my R500 when it failed to change gears. Felt like I was stuck in first gear with the RPM building and never changing into second. Restarting cured the problem in the short term. Eventually, the dealer replaced the transmission valve body and the problem was rectified. Hope that helps.

There are several limp modes on each car model.
I experienced slight limp (home) mode when my Pedal Position Sensor malfunctioned. The engine would go to default setting giving me about 80% of normal power. Enough to drive on flat freeway, but annoying in the mountain.
MAF total failure will put the car in default mode as well, so you can continue at limited performance.
The transmissions have at least couple of limp modes as well. One gives you 3rd gear, while the other might get you stuck permanently on 2nd.

You're probably right. I assumed it was locked in first, but it may very well have been second.
