Most likely, that's what that warning is for.

It may also be the regulator, it comes with new brushes and is pretty easy to change, part is about $50 at the dealer.

Good luck.

Not exactly. It piggybacks onto it.

1. Disconnect battery.

2. Remove serpentine belt.

3. Remove alternator.

4. Unscrew regulator (2 screws?).

5. Fit new regulator using old screws.

6. Reinstall alternator.

7. Reinstall fan belt.

8. Reconnect battery.

9. Run resets (from manual).

10. Enjoy.

You will need some e-torx sockets to remove the alternator, but other than that the job is pretty simple. I think there is a basic R&R for the regulator in the W210 section help stickies, it's the same basic unit. For that matter there may be good info in the forum for your vehicle, the W163 forum.

Good luck.
