2000 CLK 230 Reversing light malfunction

I have a malfunction warning which I believe is a reversing light problem as they do not appear to be working, please are there any suggestions as to a course of action.

Check the fuse, then the bulbs.

The W208 uses two designs of auto gear shift mechanism. Before 30/06/99, the Floor shift is fitted. After 01/07/99 the Electronic Selector Module (ESM) (N15/5) was introduced.

If you have a Floor shift, your problem is possibly a faulty back-up lamp switch (S16/10s1). Do you see the R illuminated by the shift lever when in reverse?

The switch is located on the side of the floor shift assembly, which has to be removed to get access to the switch. The switch is sited immediately beneath the gear range recognition switch (S16/10) and both switches have connectors/cables that have to be removed to reach the switches.

If you have the later Electronic Selector Module (N15/5), the reverse signal is derived electronically with no individual switch. The decoded signal shift lever position can be checked at a socket with the connector removed.
