Owner of OM642 Diesel powered Jeep

Hi: I'm coming here to learn more about the care and feeding of the OM642 diesel that is found in some 2007 and 2008 Grand Cherokees. Mine is a 2008 Overland with all the bells and whistles of that top end model. Engine seems solid, having just purchased the rig with 88,000 miles on it. There were records to show oil changes done at the dealer. I haven't detected the oil level to change on the dipstick in 1300 miles I've owned the rig.

There is a long thread or three on a Jeep forum about adding an oil separator (aka oil collector). I'll be curious to see if that concern shows in this forum. Some swirl motors have been destroyed due to oil leakage at the turbo inlet, in turn due to a bad seal on the air intake tube feeding the turbo. Mine has the upgraded seal. The source of the oil is the EGR, which also feeds into that intake tube. Some owners think the oil vapors from the EGR need to be captured to prevent oil residue buildup in the intercooler and intake manifold and ports. But there's no real evidence there of that happening. Mine runs very strong (love that torque) so I'm not considering any modifications right now.

Factoid: The diesel version of the Jeep has the same tow rating as the 5.7L Hemi version, 7200 lbs with 4x4 drive train. And the diesel does that without Tow Mode, the transmission trick that uses both 2nd gears and leaves out the top (nominally 5th) gear. (The diesel has a 5 spd from Mercedes with just 1 second gear; the Hemi has the 5 spd with 2 second gears.)

Peace

Tommy
