mercedes 1820 4x4 transfer oil change
Hi guys (and girls)
got an 1820 4x4, decided it is time to change the oil in the diffs and gearbox and transfer box.
all went quite well, except that...
The hubs oil level is hard to determine I know from speaking to mercedes that
you fill the back diff and than top up the hubs, well how much?
Anyway that is not the real issue.
My transfer case has two drain plugs and two filler plugs the drains are at the bottom of course, the filler are art two different levels, speaking to mercedes brought no answer to which one to fill it to, one goes third way up the box the other half way, We eventually found out that probably my box takes 5 litters meaning it is prob the bottom filler plug, so filled it up, and drove, the box got quite hot, so I decided that its probably the higher filler plug, so poured few more litters to see if that would cool it, but after some more driving....
The box was so hot the paint was peeling and oil started pouring out, obviously it was not the top filler plug.
The question is why is it heating up, I used 80w 90 as my oil, in everything, mercedes said 85w 90 and than 75w 90 so I figured 80w 90 is good bet.
Does anyone know which oil for the hubs the diffs the gearbox and most important the transfer case, truck is 1820 4x4 1994 with 366la engine.
Also if you know where I can find a workshop manual .
Anyway any information is appreciated
