1993 300d 2.5td Purchase...Hence Newbie

Guten Abend, mein freunds. That's about the extent of my German language mastery. My father had always spoke to us about the virtues of German engineering (he was born in Germany), and emigrated to Canada in 1956.

He owned a 1966 230 at one time, or perhaps a 200, and I have to agree, that it did seem to have a certain solidness about it. Well, more than 30 years later, I purchased my first Mercedes. It is a 1993 300d 2.5td. I purchased it from the original owner, also a German emigrant, named Dieter, with 534,319 km's on the clock. The car is in beautiful condition, with some slight rust starting in places, but mechanically feels as though it has 100,000 km's on it. Although I have yet to get it's insurance inspection, I feel it will pass in flying colors. I will post some pictures of it once I get some dumped onto my computer.

I purchased the vehicle recognizing the longevity of the diesel motor these vehicles possess, and also for sentimental reasons (my dad), who passed away 2 years ago. I will be driving the vehicle 2200 km's to visit my hometown in 3 weeks time, and wish he could be there to see me drive in the driveway. I sold my 2007 Nissan Altima, and replaced it with the Mercedes, and just love driving this classic already. I come home dog tired some evenings, and still take the car out for a drive, just for the thrill of driving. I know the collective wisdom of sites like this is invaluable in trying to troubleshoot and maintain an older vehicle. Thanks for the welcome!

Welcome Dieter,

I lived in Edmonton for 7 years and owned a Mercury Marquis Station Wagon Country Squire with the 460 CI engine. (6-8 MPG)

I recall, with some amusement, driving away from the house with square tires at -40C and taking 5 miles or more at 20 mph to round them up. The transmission had to be left in neutral for at least 5 minutes warm up time in order for it to shift... and the unique pleasure the ring piece enjoyed upon seating on the seat vinyl.

You could have MAJOR winter problems unless your car is garaged or kept warm with either a hot water circulation system or a very good block heater.

GL and enjoy your Benz.
