It is generally reliable, but I have seen no actual data on that... Here's where I got it: Mercedes-Benz Club Russia | Mercedes-Benz / VIN

Don't believe everything you think

As above, the list of option codes should be accurate. As you can see, some option codes are not decoded at all (the site does not know what the code means but it knows the option is valid for the car) and sometimes one option code has had several interpretations over years or car models and the site lists those all, then you have to interpret yourself which one is valid for your car.

If you want to know more about the unknown codes, just ask and someone will explain it.

I'm not sure if it is post 1980 but it could well be, also it does not cover most recent cars, a couple of years missing from that end too.

Datacard for VIN wdb1070452a004171 is not found
1) VIN was misspelled in the request form;
2) VIN was erroneously read from vehicle body or documents;
3) VIN is not of an original vehicle and was forged by criminals;
4) The vehicle was produced in late 2005 or 2006, and is not included yet in our database

I assume that's from the Russian web site? I had the same results. I have a feeling that the R107 VIN are slightly different as they originated in 1971, and no other post-1980 Mercedes is as early in its origin. Feasible?

Any more help greatly appreciated.

Ben

I've seen VIN numbers from US cars that are unknown for the MB official database. Perhaps grey import cars, could be related to the issue of US VIN format (external versus internal VIN). But this does not appear to be a US related case and this R107 VIN follows the MB internal format anyway and appears at the MB on-line database. I assume sclassy has already received this info.

My sincere thanks. Nice to see the MB community stick together to help the new-comers!

Hi Gary,
I cannot find anything after 1995 for the W140/119 chassis & engine ID.
The 1995 is a 140.051 119.970, but I want to know if the 1998 is the same or a 119.980.
Where is the engine tag? My VIN is WDBGA51G1WA3905nn, can you decode?

Tks
BOBB
