'95 300 Diesel

i've been shopping for '95 300 diesels, and have been told to determine whether a) wiring harness and b) a/c evaporator have been replaced. a dealer suggests that this has been done for all of these vehicles out there.

does this sound correct?

thanks

I would say most of the harnesses have, in fact, been replaced by now, at least on cars that are still running. I wouldn't be quite as certain about the evaporator, but at least the car will run fine with a leaky evaporator as opposed to a bad harness.

thanks very much. by the way, i just bought a '78 300d w/81K on the clock. it's not turbo charged, and runs fine. is there any way to tweak a bit more power out of these things, such as mods to the pump? it's done in the trucking business all the time.

It would be easier to just transplant a turbo engine.

the cheapest is to sell this car and get one with turbo. That is what I did.
wire harness on 95 300 diesel? I assume this is the same engine I had in 97 300d?
No spark plugs, mechanical injectors, no camshaft sensor. I wonder what wire harness we are talking about here?
Evaporators on those cars do break down, but not more often than on other cars.

There is an upper engine harness with about 20 end points, and it is prone to failure. If you can a find a part tag look for the FD/fabrication date to see if it is original.

thanks very much. i had assumed that the engine was designed to run that way, and there wasn't much you could do about it, except keep your foot on the floor. that said, it runs fine, and should last forever with care. i got spoiled by my previous turbo.

I drove the 134 hp non turbo and 134 hp is 134hp. Comparing to cars with 75 or even 21 hp I used to drive it wasn't bad, but the power curve was additional issue. The engine was reaching peak hp close to 5000 rpm redline, so if you wanted it to perform, you had to hear the noise. Almost the same engine with turbo gives you nice kick just above 2000 rpm
